So last week, Mr. Pickup and I had our birthdays. It was a crazy week, and so very low-key.
Not to say nothing happened...I went on a lunch date with Mr. Pickup on his birthday, and we went to see the Avengers movie on my birthday. :) However, on Sunday I decided we still needed to have a belated birthday cake.
I'd had the Caramel Cake recipe from Smitten Kitchen pinned to my "Food" pinterest board for a while. I finally remembered to purchase some heavy cream, (not on my every day shopping list!), and made this Sunday afternoon.
The cake looked gorgeous coming out of the oven...but caved in the middle shortly afterward. It could be that I didn't use cake flour. Also not a usual purchase for me.
Here is the glaze beginning to boil. Mmm, caramel glaze.
Following Deb's caution, I only cooked the caramel to 212 degrees (Fahrenheit). I think next time I will cook it longer to get it more fondant looking. We scarfed it up too quickly to worry about it getting too hard.
Big Sis wanted to try lighting the candles. Don't you love the intense look on the littles faces?
Mr. Pickup soon took over the lighting task, and the kids crooned Happy Birthday to their parents.
I'll definitely be making this again. In our new house.
I was looking through my food board, and realized it is almost entirely desserts. What does that say about me?

Happy birthday! Your son looks like he's expecting the whole place to go up in flames. Great photo!
I mostly pin desserts too (and rarely actually cook them!).

That's funny about your food board. If I did Pinterest, I'm sure it would be the same for me. :)
