Gryffindor Fleece Scarves + Tutorial

To wrap up my costume making this year, we made Gryffindor inspired scarves. I say "we" because my older children both helped to stitch them together.

They are pretty simple to make.  I'm sure there's a better way out there, but this is what my frazzled brain came up with.

To make three scarves, I used:
  • 1/2 yard burgandy fleece
  • 1/2 yard gold fleece
  • Matching thread
  • Rotary cutter and rulers
  • Sewing machine and some patience!

Step one.  Cut up that fabric!  With half a yard of fabric, I was able to get exactly 3 scarves, 6 inches wide. I cut them as straight as I could from selvage to selvage (factory edges).  The hardest things is keeping those lines straight.

A rotary cutter and ruler really help with this.

Next, cut up the gold stripes.  I cut 2" wide strips selvage to selvage, and then cut the strips in 6 inch widths.  I used 18 stripes per scarf.

Step two.  Make some fringe.   I love fleece because as a non-woven, it doesn't fray.  Cut off the factory edge, first.  To make the fringe, I cut approximately 2 inches up the ends, about 1/4" apart.

Step three.  Assemble your scarf.  Finding the middle of the scarf, I pinned the first gold stripe.

I pinned the subsequent stripes about 4 inches apart.

Repeat on the other side.

Carefully zigzag stitch the stripes to each other and the scarf.

Step four.  Finishing touches.  After you've sewn 9 strips, the fabric may have pulled a little bit.  Trim off the extra.  Trim all the long threads, too.

Finally, sew a zig zag stitch along the edge to seal everything together.

If you want to help your son earn a Webelos badge, you can make him sew some of it himself.  Just sayin'.

There you go.  A simple, but effective way to make a Gryffindor fleece scarf.

p.s.  Last Friday was crazy school spirit day, so my daughter was sporting wild hair.  My little son was squinting from the sun, and my oldest has stayed home to make sure he was over his stomach bug which his dad and now I have shared.  Yuck.
