Pinterest inspired hits and a miss

Do you ever look through your Pinterest feed and think, I need to try that?  Well...here are a few ideas that I've given a whirl.
First up, homemade fabric softener.
I'd seen this formula on several different pin boards, and when Suave conditioner was on sale, I picked up a bottle.  Here's my version:

The original pin:

I was underwhelmed by this stuff, frankly.  I had a hard time getting it to mix completely, resorting to the microwaving the mixture in the mason jar a couple minutes to get it to dissolve.  It smelled great, when the wash was done in the washing machine, but  by the time the clothes went through the dryer, I couldn't smell anything.  Also, the static cling was horrible.  So, a miss.

Next, shower cleaner said to remove all soap scum.  Here's my version:

I was pleased with how this works.  It doesn't get the hard water stains, but it did remove the soap scum.  I have only used it once, and the mixture had separated a bit in the bottle while it sat idle.  I'm wondering if I need to reheat it again before I use it...

While we're cleaning the shower, I loved this shower scrub mixture from Martha.  I've actually used it a several times now. (Sorry, no photo, I've got to mix some more up!)

I did add a half cup of Kosher salt to my mixture (idea from a different recipe I'd tried), and cut down on the essential oil from my first batch.  It was way too strong the first time!

Finally a home run.  Homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream, no ice cream freezer required.  Here's my version:

and Cheryl's infinitely better photography:

The recipe is simple, sweet, but not too sweet. I did stir things up in the container about 3 hours after I popped it in the freezer. The chocolate chips had sunk to the bottom. I was too impatient to chop mine as fine as Cheryl had.

How about you?  Anything you have found through Pinterest that you've tried lately?

  3. I think most of my misses have been food - mentioned one on my Pinterest board for things I've made from Pinterest the other one didn't even warrant that. :)

I just use straight vinegar for my fabric softener. My clothes don't have any smell at all and that is fine with me and the vinegar does a great job getting rid of soap residue and while it doesn't get rid of all static cling, I don't seem to have a huge problem with it.

I miss having an ice cream freezer, maybe I should try this.

  5. It's good to know that I'm not the only one that doesnt manage to exactly make things like they're posted on Pinterest :) I noticed that everyone seems to take about 100 photos and picks out the ONE that looks amazing. Of course I now do the same (well, maybe not 100) but it does make it all a bit scary sometimes. Thanx for sharing the hit and also the misses!

  6. My favorite part about Pinterest cleaning pins is you dont waste money because you either have the stuff or can use it on something else if it fails miserably. I read about the shower one too and was gonna try it this weekend. Lata.

  8. Although I didn't find it on Pintrest, I have been making my own laundry detergent for over a year. It cost me about $25 to make detergent for a whole year for five adults. The smell is not great, but I use Downy for fabric softener and the clothes smell fine. As far as cleaning power, I love this detergent, espcially when I see the price of Tide going up almost every week!

  9. Ya, I have had some misses lately too. Like the Crockpot Orange Chicken. It was not a favorite at all. Plus, a few others. In fact, I have had enough misses lately to really make me question a few things. Have you heard about the law suits going on with pinterest now too? But, I have also had some great successes. Plus, since I am a visual person, I just still LOVE it.

  10. Thanks for doing this Chris! I have wondered about the fabric softener...now I know. I want to start a new board that is entitled "Things I've actually done from Pinterest". It is such a problem for me though...an addiction. I've had to seriously change my internet settings to make myself not spend all night looking! :)

  11. Wow, thanks for testing all of these for us and telling us your results. I've wanted to make homemade fabric softner, but maybe I should do some more research before I try. We'll have to try the ice cream, though! xoxoxo
